Achieving APN Tier Compliance by Meeting the Requirement for Public References

AWS Partner NetworkOn April 1, 2019, the AWS Partner Network (APN) announced updates to the overall APN program, which included updated APN tier requirements. One of those requirements focuses on the identification of publicly referenceable customers.

Customer references are consistently recognized by successful APN Partners as one of the top reasons they are selected by net-new customers.

References give you the opportunity to highlight previous successes and demonstrate how your organization can solve current business challenges for Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers.

In this post, I will cover the ways in which your organization can identify a publicly referenceable customer, the various public asset options available, and how you can track and manage your progress toward compliance against this requirement in APN Partner Central.

What Qualifies as a Public Reference?

The APN’s renewed approach to publicly referenceable customers includes a range of options and improved flexibility for organizations. Achieving compliance may be easier than you think.

Many APN Partners have found they can leverage assets they already have in place to meet this customer-focused requirement while they work to identify future referenceable workloads and customers.

Case Studies

Case studies are considered by our most successful APN Partners to be the highest value referenceable asset you can make available to a potential customer. Case studies can either be self-authored or co-authored with AWS.

We have seen great examples of APN Partners creating unique case studies, leveraging case study templates available in APN Marketing Central, or providing website links that focus on customer success stories.

Other Approved Assets

Case studies are not the only option available to your organization when providing a link to a publicly referenceable asset. Other approved assets include news articles, blog posts, videos, customer quotes, and a page on your website featuring customer logos.

What we care about most when approving references is that your entry clearly indicates the relationship between your organization and the AWS customer, by name, as well as a reference to the AWS-based workload that was delivered.

Submitting a Public Reference

APN Consulting and Technology Partners at the Select tier and above are required to submit public references per the updated APN tier requirements. The following table outlines the number of public references for each tier.

Once you have identified a referenceable customer, the process for submitting that customer as a public reference has been streamlined to reduce the amount of time, effort, and impact to your organization.

We now provide two simplified ways to submit public references within APN Partner Central.

APN Public References Tool

Your organization’s Alliance Lead can submit a publicly referenceable customer via the Public References Tool in APN Partner Central.

  • Log in to APN Partner Central.
  • Go to View My APN Account.
  • Scroll down to the Public References Tool.
  • Select New and complete the required fields. Click Save.

ACE Pipeline Manager

Previously launched opportunities can be designated as publicly referenceable via the ACE Pipeline Manager.

The APN Customer Engagements (ACE) platform provides you with resources, tools, and the sales and technical support to ensure you are supported in driving meaningful engagements with AWS customers.

  • Log in to APN Partner Central.
  • Go to the My Customers tab.
  • Click into a previously launched opportunity from your list of customers.
  • Select the Public Reference tab.
  • Complete the required fields and click Save.

Both of these methods asks you to provide a few details about your referenceable customer, such as customer name, public reference title, and public reference URL.

Creating Compelling Titles for Your References

We understand you may deliver multiple workloads for your customers. To recognize these efforts with new and existing customers, it’s important to the take advantage of the public reference title field. This allows you to differentiate between various workloads you’ve delivered and want to reference publicly for the same customer.

Examples of informative public reference titles include: “DevOps and Cloud Culture Drive Velocity in Retail,” and “Introducing Serverless to Optimize Cost with Everyday Applications.”

Tracking Your Organization’s Progress

After logging into APN Partner Central, your Alliance Lead can track the count of publicly referenceable customers from the Partner Scorecard Overview.

Publicly referenceable customers submitted via the ACE platform are instantly reflected in your Partner Scorecard. References submitted via the Public References Tool are reviewed for approval within five (5) business days.

Best Practices for Capturing Public References

  • Identify existing case studies, blog posts, news articles, or logo pages that can be leveraged as references.
  • Work with your sales team to identify potential customers that might act as a great customer reference.
  • Review contractual language for updates that might open the door to future reference opportunities.
  • Work with your APN representative to explore additional options for public references, and referenceable assets.

We’ve heard from AWS Partner Network (APN) Partners and customers around the world that hiring skilled cloud talent can be a challenge. As part of our larger AWS Training and Certification vision, we want to help build a pipeline for entry-level cloud roles.

To this end, we have a new cohort of cloud-ready, AWS-trained individuals ready for employment across the United States.

We are excited to announce the launch of AWS re/Start in the U.S. after a two-year pilot in the United Kingdom. AWS re/Start is a full-time, classroom-based skills development and training program designed to prepare individuals to launch new careers in cloud computing.

Cohorts of 25 students in Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami are finishing up their course of study and will be ready for employment before the end of August 2019.

About AWS re/Start

AWS re/Start is building a new generation of talent at a time when industry needs it the most. According to Global Knowledge, 70 percent of IT decision-makers said their teams presently face a shortage of necessary skills. Likewise, according to LinkedIn data, cloud computing is the number one hard skill companies need most in 2019.

AWS re/Start is the latest addition to our growing suite of education programs to help build the pipeline of cloud talent, which includes AWS Academy.

AWS re/Start’s mission is to build local talent by providing accessible Amazon Web Services (AWS) skills development and job opportunities to underserved populations. The program recruits unemployed or underemployed individuals, including military veterans and their families as well as young people, and prepares them to launch careers in cloud technology.

AWS re/Start provides learners with scenario-based exercises, labs, and coursework to help them gain the skills needed to be successful in entry-level cloud roles. The program also provides learners with resume and interview coaching to prepare for employer meetings and interviews.

We intentionally developed this program to give people who may not have considered a cloud career a way to get started. We’re not waiting for learners to come to us. We’re bringing cloud to them.

Best Practices for Managing Your APN Partner Solutions Finder Listing to Connect with Customers

AWS Partner NetworkFor AWS Partner Network (APN) Partners at the Select tier and above, the AWS Partner Solutions Finder (PSF) is a useful tool that enables AWS customers to easily search for and connect with APN Consulting and Technology Partners based on their business needs.

This experience is now available in Japanese apart from English.

Customers regularly use the Partner Solutions Finder to discover APN Partners that can help them design, migrate, manage, and optimize workloads on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Each APN Partner is responsible for managing their own PSF profile listing, with up-to-date information about your company that will help your page surface in customers’ search results.

In this post, I will explore best practices for managing your PSF listing and getting the most out of this valuable resource for APN Partners.

How Customers Use the Search Options

The AWS Partner Solutions Finder search bar delivers results based on partner name, AWS Competency and other APN program designations, as well as partner solutions, case studies, office locations, and other key areas important to customers.

Searches can be further refined based on industry, AWS products, use cases, and public sector offerings such as socioeconomic categories and contract vehicles.

An APN Partner’s standing in PSF search results depends on several factors. It’s primarily based on search relevance related to keywords input by users that connect with partner information such as name, locations, solutions, case studies, and participation in various APN programs.

Another factor that influences standing in PSF search results is a partner’s APN tier status (Select, Advanced, Premier). Organizations at the registered level are not shown in PSF results. Companies must be Select tier or higher to have a visible PSF listing.

With the launch of the PSF in Japanese, APN Partners with offices in Japan will rank higher in the Japanese language experience.

The PSF also surfaces APN Partners based on AWS-validated qualifications, such as AWS Competency and AWS Service Delivery designations, as well as membership in the AWS Managed Services Provider (MSP), Well-Architected, Public Sector, and Solution Provider Partner Programs, to name a few.

APN programs like these help highlight a company’s areas of expertise to AWS customers. Learn more about the differentiation programs available to APN Consulting and Technology Partners, and connect with your partner representative to see how you can join.

What’s Included in Your PSF Listing

The Partner Solutions Finder listing for each APN Partner includes important information about your company’s AWS offering, including:

  • AWS Competencies
  • AWS Service Delivery designations
  • APN program memberships (MSP, Public Sector, Well-Architected)
  • AWS Certifications
  • Target customer base
  • Case studies
  • Company locations

Some of this information is reported by AWS and will appear in an APN Partner’s PSF listing automatically. This includes AWS Competencies, APN program memberships, and public sector contract vehicles. Other information, such as your company logo and areas of focus, must be self-reported by APN Partners in their Partner Central account.

APN Partner descriptions and reported qualifications are provided by the APN Partner and are not verified by AWS.

Red designates areas of the PSF listing that are auto-populated by AWS; Green represents areas that must be self-reported by APN Partners. Please click the image to enlarge.

How to Manage Your PSF Listing

APN Partners at the Select tier and above can manage their Partner Solutions Finder listing in APN Partner Central. To make edits to your listing, Alliance Leads can access the My Partner Solutions Finder Listing page and update the company details section.

You can add office locations and updated partner-reported qualifications. Organizations at the registered level do have access to this page and can update their company information, but the Partner Solution Finder listing page will only go live when they move to the Select tier.

To update your PSF listing, follow these easy steps:

  1. Login to APN Partner Central (Alliance Lead access only).
  2. Click on My Partner Solutions Finder listing.
  3. Choose the information you want to update.
  4. Click Edit on the relevant tab and add content to the field you wish to update, and then Save.
  5. To add Japanese language content to target users on the Japanese experience of PSF, you will discover the options to Add Language on the same pages.
  6. Partners may also add locations to their PSF listing, ensuring your company shows up based on location-related searches from customers.

Updates made to your company name will change the name of your company in APN Partner Central and in the PSF listing. Brief descriptions must be 135 characters or less, and detailed descriptions must be 400 characters or less. A logo is required for all PSF listings.

Once your updates have been submitted to the APN programs team, you will not be able to make edits to your listing during the review period. Listings are reviewed within two (2) business days.

You may also add locations and languages to your PSF listing. To add an additional language other than Japanese, Chinese, and English, submit your brief and detailed company descriptions in the preferred language.

Additional content, such as case studies and solutions can be added in the View My APN Account section in APN Partner Central. Case studies and solutions are highlighted in your PSF listing once these are reviewed and approved by the APN team.

Leads and Opportunities

Customers have the option to connect with APN Partners through the Partner Solutions Finder listing, which creates a lead for your company via the AWS Customer Engagements (ACE) Program.

When a customer chooses to connect with you, they will share their company information, contact details, and a description of their project. Your Alliance Lead can then view this lead in Partner Central in the My Customers tab under the “Leads” section.

Customer Feedback

To help APN Partners gather feedback that can be used to optimize their offerings, we have a Rate this Partner feature on every Partner Solutions Finder listing. Customers can submit feedback to you about an APN Partner’s business, services, or experience.

Customers can submit feedback by following the steps below:

  1. Visit the AWS Partner Solutions Finder.
  2. Search for the APN Partner you worked with.
  3. Click the Rate this Partner button on the right side of the page.
  4. Fill in and submit the Customer Review Form.
  5. Complete the steps to validate your email address.

Each time customers submit a review, we will ask their permission to share their contact information with APN Partners. This gives you an opportunity to know which individuals submitted the feedback and to follow-up with them directly, if applicable.

The APN programs team reviews and verifies customer feedback to ensure responses are valid, constructive, and insightful.

Alliance Leads can view customer reviews in your Partner Scorecard under the “Customer Reviews” section in Partner Central. These are the reviews your customers have opted to share with you.

How it Works

Our consumption of electricity is at the heart of the technological evolution occurring right now.

All of the devices we currently use—from cars and laptops to cutting-edge medical equipment—need electricity to run. Each new addition, each new device, puts an even greater demand on our need for electricity.

To set some context, there are two classifications of energy: renewable and non-renewable. Non-renewable energy comes in the form of oil, gas, and nuclear, whereas renewable energy is more closely associated with wind and solar.

As climate change has become increasingly more important to the citizens of the world, there has been a shift in desire from non-renewable to renewable sources of energy. This shift is changing the energy market in unprecedented ways.

The main challenge renewables face is related to the expensive maintenance of energy equipment. Focusing on the wind energy production line specifically, Sentient Science teamed up with TensorIoT and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop ColdStart, a machine learning-based solution that reduces the cost of wind farm maintenance by helping to predict turbine failure.

In this post, I will explore how we used machine learning along with publicly accessible data to help Sentient Science predict turbine maintenance, allowing them to continue delivering a constant and steady flow of electricity to the power grid.

Since 2001, Sentient Science has been devoted to extending the remaining useful life of fielded assets, such as wind turbines, and optimizing new product design and testing.

Wind Turbines Are Complex Power Machines

Wind turbines are the leading source of renewable energy. Many countries are investing in wind-powered machines, but the maintenance of turbines that needs to happen frequently is both expensive and complex.

When a turbine is down due to any kind of damage, it is no longer able to supply power to the grid. This has impacts for the rest of the power grid, which needs to readjust for the drop in expected power levels caused by the troubled turbine.

As a result of this impact to the power grid, reducing the downtime of a turbine is extremely important. Predicting when a turbine failure will occur can help ensure preventive maintenance takes place. This maintenance reduces the time the turbine is out of service, and prevents a complete turbine failure that would be extremely expense to repair.

Through the combination of machine learning, public datasets, and incoming telemetry data, Sentient Science and TensorIoT developed the ColdStart solution to provide customers the ability to forecast failures of specific turbines, thus ensuring repairs can be done proactively.

Understanding the Flow of Wind Itself

TensorIoT-Sentient Science-1The nature of the problem faced in maintaining wind turbines lies in understanding the flow of wind itself.

In a perfect setting, wind turbines are positioned perpendicular to the wind, which increases their efficiency and reduces damage. However, wind is a fluid and flows in a very unpredictable pattern that changes constantly. Wind cannot be relied upon to flow in one direction, which makes the placement of turbines critical to their ultimate success.

Much like predicting how ink will disperse in a glass of water, predicting the flow of wind is nearly impossible. Because there are many factors that play into the wind’s behavior (terrain, temperature, pressure), ideal conditions are almost never met.

Often, wind hits a turbine as a turbulent fluid, and the erratic behavior of wind causes incremental damage over time. Slight variation in wind speeds can cause helices to have uneven force applied to each blade, causing even more damage.

Because of the complexity of the problem and the random way that wind flows across the turbine, a statistical model would fail to predict any type of failure. ColdStart, however, uses machine learning to account for each individual attribute and predict turbine failures based on what the algorithms have learned through data extrapolation and investigation.

Data Storage, Transformation, and Analysis

Every ML project needs to have a reliable place to store the large amounts of data the project will consume.

ColdStart needed a storage medium that was scalable, secure, and easily accessible. We leveraged Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to store the project data and made use of the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI) for the quick and easy transfer of data between different sources.

Next, it was important to determine the different file formats and file types for the data. We found that several files needed to be extracted using software, which could be challenging without the right interface. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) allowed us to set up an environment and install packages that allowed for the extraction and transformation of the data used in the ML model.

Meteorological data files (.hdf) are usually massive in size, and importing them from Amazon S3 using CLI solves the challenge of uploading and downloading on an instance. This helped us analyze the data and formulate a method to get meaningful data features used for training.

As for the other kinds of files, we used a combination of the Amazon Deep Learning AMI and Amazon SageMaker to gain a better understanding of the data. In both instances, we used Jupyter Notebooks to analyze the data. Jupyter is in open-source web application that allows users to analyze and visualize data.

Our approach of using Amazon Deep Learning AMI, Amazon SageMaker, and Jupyter notebooks accomplished two major issues:

  • Data visualization. When dealing with a serverless environment, it can be exhausting to run code iteratively because it takes a long time to produce graphs and make modifications to the code. By using Jupyter notebooks, however, we avoid these long waiting periods.
  • Communicating ideas with experts. In a data science project, it’s important to communicate with experts to get a better grasp of the data and interpret any double counting of data.

There were three main libraries used for the exploration process: Numpy, Pandas, and Matplotlib. These libraries, integrated with the Jupyter environment, made exploration easy.

Numpy was used for matrix manipulation, while Pandas was used for data frame manipulations, and Matplotlib was our preferred plotting tool. Transforming data comprised of two main steps: performing feature extraction/correlation, and analyzing features.

Finding correlated features was challenging because of the multitude of features available. When looking at our documentation and metadata, we determined what features were redundant and what features were needed.

For example, some features could be combined into one bigger feature (think area vs. using width/height). In other situations, knowledge of certain attributes (such as efficiency of conversion) were created using known mathematical formulas, reducing the number of features to be used.

While analyzing metadata provides a lot of insight about the relationship between features, it’s often not enough. Metadata relies heavily on documentation and known relationships. In many cases, features that do not seem related could be related to one another. To discover these intrinsic relationships, we performed analysis on the data itself.

Each individual attribute can be looked at as a jigsaw piece in a large puzzle canvas. Although plenty, each attribute has a specific role in getting the best model. To make the most of each attribute, we needed to have a lot of conversations with subject matter experts.

By using creative and novel ideas, a lot of the different transformations that were used have been successfully implemented to transform the data for training purposes.

Creating the Machine Learning Model

Now that we had the cleaned and transformed data, it was time to look at training ML models. Amazon SageMaker provides comprehensive configuration setup for both pre-built algorithms and custom-made algorithms. This allows data scientists to focus directly on the model’s output rather than doing a step-by-step training process.

Choosing what model to use is the most challenging aspect for the ML team. For our project, this was done through constant testing and iteration.

When a new ML model was created, there were three steps we needed to answer:

  • What performance metric should we use?
  • Does this model meet business objectives?
  • How can we create a better model?

Instead of diving into more complex models, our team decided to start with the easiest models to understand. By successively adding more layers of complexity, it was easier to understand what other attributes were needed to make the model more accurate.

In many cases, it was not enough to simply combine two attributes together. Rather, we needed to get information from another public dataset, analyze it, and integrate it into the data pipeline. The addition of another public dataset gave us another set of attributes to add to the model that we were able to use to refine the model we currently had and increase the accuracy exponentially.

The other public dataset we added was information about the physical location of the turbine. This dataset had information such as elevation, geographical location, and azimuth, which refers to an angular measurement in a spherical coordinate system. When these data points were combined with the data we knew about the stresses and tolerances of the wind turbine, we were able to more accurately determine the forces that were being exerted on the turbine and would eventually lead to its failure.

We used that information to make a preventive maintenance forecast for the turbine. This forecast is used by Sentient Science customers to do maintenance on the wind turbines before the turbine experiences a failure and would be down for an extended downtime.

This process allows the wind turbines to operate at maximum efficiency with planned minimal downtime maintenance, which was the ultimate goal of the project.

TensorIoT-Sentient Science-5AWS pay-as-you-go solutions greatly reduced the initial and ongoing cost of the ColdStart project. Utilizing Amazon S3 and Amazon SageMaker ensured the handling of data was extremely easy, scalable, and secure, on top of a flexible environment.

Working with AWS services allowed us to go through model creation and multiple iterations of validation. AWS also simplified our collaboration with Sentient Science, which was essential to the data science effort.

After the completion of the project, Sentient Science said the ColdStart offering enables their sales team to approach and engage with wind energy customers at 10X scale and is projected to shorten the sale cycle by 50 percent.

The IoT and machine learning infrastructure put in place to support ColdStart has formed the backbone for Sentient Science Data Ingestion Pipeline and Analytics Runtime, which supports the company’s DigitalClone platform.

In the span of a three-month engagement with AWS and TensorIoT, Sentient Science has laid a technology foundation that would take similar-sized companies 1-2 years to build.

How to Manage Your Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) Data in APN Partner Central

AWS Partner NetworkOn April 1, 2019, the AWS Partner Network (APN) announced updates to the overall APN program. This included updated benefits for APN Partners, such as prescriptive funding based on your current tier and program attainment, and new APN tier requirements.

The APN Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) Program is one of the new requirements we added for 2019.

In this post, I will explain what’s new with the APN CSAT program, how to access your unique customer review form URL, and how to see your CSAT data available in APN Partner Central.

The APN CSAT program helps businesses gather feedback and understand the impacts they’ve had on Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers.

The goal of the APN CSAT program is for APN Partners to demonstrate ongoing customer success to AWS. By capturing the voice of your end customers, we can ensure APN Partners continue to meet and exceed the high quality bar promised by the AWS Partner Network.

How it Works

The APN CSAT program asks AWS customers how likely they are to recommend an APN Partner on a scale of 0-10. By maximizing the number of satisfied customers and decreasing the overall amount of dissatisfied customers, you can increase customer retention and grow your business.

The program has undergone a complete overhaul in preparation for being added to the new APN tier requirements in 2019. Updates include CSAT count requirements and an automated way of surfacing both count and data from customers. At this time, we are not sharing or tracking aggregate scores with APN Partners, as our requirements are only based around response count.

All members of the AWS Partner Network are now eligible to receive CSAT data, and have been provided a unique customer review form URL that you can find in your APN Partner Central account.

New APN CSAT Tier Requirements

We are now requiring APN Partners to have a specific number of customers submit responses via the “Rate this Partner” function within your APN Partner Solutions Finder (PSF) listing. This creates a direct line of communication between AWS and customers, who can share more information about their experiences working with APN Partners.

The table below outlines current CSAT tier requirements for APN Partners.

APN CSAT Updates-1

All APN Partners must acquire the responses within the trailing 12 months of their APN membership renewal date. APN Partners can track progress towards these requirements on the Partner Scorecard in APN Partner Central.

Accessing Your APN CSAT Data

Beginning April 1, 2019, AWS began sharing limited CSAT data with partners via APN Partner Central. You can access the data by following these simple steps:

  • Look at the Customer Satisfaction Responses to see your overall count.

  • Scroll down to the Customer Reviews object to see your approved CSAT data.

The final question on the APN customer review form asks all users to proactively consent to sharing their submitted response with the concerning APN Partner.

If a customer opts in to sharing the response, you will be able to see the customer’s name, email, company, and open response comment. Today, most responses come in without the customer opt in, so don’t be alarmed if you have many responses in the count section but no additional details down below.

Best Practices for Managing CSAT Counts

Customer satisfaction data is a powerful tool that can change your business, but it requires a commitment to getting more feedback and reviewing your scores regularly.

Here are some best practices for capturing CSAT data:

  • Create a redirect link to the customer review form URL based on your web domain.
  • Add the customer review form URL to your website.
  • Continually ask customers for feedback two weeks to two months after a project has been completed.
  • Request responses from multiple individuals in the same organization that has worked with you.
  • Ask the same people multiple times throughout the year to provide responses so you can build a continuous feedback loop with customers.
  • Offer an incentive to customers for completing a customer review and opting in to share their information
